Essentialized by Hegemonic Mindsets

I have been called a foreigner in one of my classes by one of my classmates. The class consists of 7 people and the professor. In that instant, they had the choice of siding with the person being attacked or remain silent and complicit. They did the latter.

There is a difference between being American, being an American citizen, and being a foreigner. Probably she does not know that. When she looks at me, knowing that I am not "American" born, she doesn't see an American citizen, all she sees is a foreigner. In a world plagued by xenophobia, this type of derogatory labeling used on people perceived as foreigners can be very dangerous.
